TEARS GALLERY

THE PRINCESS

The palace announced that the princess was at the right age to marry; and she would marry the one who could give her the most valuable gift. The princess was very beautiful, the princess was very pretty, and not even a star could shine more than her. And it happened that kings, princes, leaders; who were very powerful came and were contemplating and admiring the princess; and they fell in love with her with passion and madness. They brought and gave her, chests full of treasures which could be seen glistening in a very large room. These chests were really wonderful, extraordinary, full of what one cannot imagine: diamonds, rubies, crowns, gold coins; produced by extraordinary goldsmiths. And it happened that the son of a goldsmith fell in love with the princess and his father said to him :

"Son, do not build your hopes, she is not for you, everything that has gone through your hands is not yours, they have entrusted it to you only. You are poor and you only have a salary, what could you give her? So, do not even look at her. This is said for your own good. We are not rich and we will never be worthy of so much beauty." Then, that young man cried, cried and cried. But, anyway, the palace continued having big banquets, big gentlemen and opening the chests. The princess was beautiful, the princess was pretty, although she had an slightly sad smile because she felt that she was sold to the best bidder with the most expensive gift. The men presenting these treasures were quite old, others had wives since they had also bought many princesses with the power of their fortunes.

Then, the moment came to open the last chest, which was brought in front of the king, the queen and the princess. This was a very small chest, truly small, so small as the size of a coin. It was simple but was shining with great splendor. Then, the king said: " This must be a joke. Let's leave it aside." But the beautiful princess felt curiosity, thinking: " I do not know what this is but may be something good."  And she asked her father to open the chest and when the chest was opened, a small parchment was found and read. It said: " I know that by doing this, I am risking my life. But I must tell the beautiful princess that although I am not worthy of her, I love her more than the night to the stars.
I leave here my gift. I, do not have anything and I am not anybody, but the value of the feeling that I show here, that I give here; it may be of no value for many, but for me it means love to the most beautiful princess." And tied to the small manuscript, there was a teeny-weeny bottle and inside, there was a tear. This was the gift of the humble goldsmith who had dared to win the love of the most beautiful princess. The king felt most offended, after having read this, and asked to bring in front of him the one who had dared to send this note and insignificant tear. The young man was brought, his clothes were torn and the king asked him:
" Do you have fortune? Do you have power? Neither the clothes that you are wearing nor the food that you eat, belong to you. How did you dare?
Because of your arrogance, you will lose your life today."

And the father of the goldsmith who was present said to his son: " Son, what have you done? My beloved son, you have surrendered your life today in the hands of death." And then, the father knelt in front of the king asking for mercy:
" Mercy, pardon, my king! It is my fault, I must have taught him badly and no matter how much I warned him, he did not pay attention. Pardon, pardon, my king, but the one who must die is me. Send my son in exile, away from the palace, away from the city, but forgive him, do not take his life, take mine instead. " And the king said: " I will take both because of your bold arrogance. You do not deserve to be in front of me, nor of my powerful guests." Then, the son of the goldsmith dared to say a few words:

" Pardon, my king; my father is an old man and I did wrong because I did not pay attention to him. It is my life and nobody else, who must be taken. I wrote that note, with my blood and that tear is one of many that I spilt for not being able to offer a better present. Please, let my father go since I am the one who deserves death. I already lived, for sure, all that I had to live. What else can I say? Forgive me for having fallen in love with the one who was higher than me." And it happened that a bonfire was immediately prepared and the king called the guests and said: " This is my kingdom and I am in charge and out of consideration for you and your power, this insolent young man will have to die." And a column of branches and dry wood was raised and the official executioner was called.

The father of the young man was crying while his son was trying to calm him saying:  " I am sorry for not listening to you, father, but my love was born in one day and grew so fast that it had wings and wanted to fly towards the sun. Today, I will face my destiny. You are the best father and you have taught me the virtue of loving; you always gave me the best advice and that is why I could not be different. Do not remember me with pain but as a courageous man. Nevertheless, I ask for your forgiveness for the pain that I am causing you.  I ask you not to stay, I ask you to go away and just to remember me as one more worker. I kiss your hands and feet, allow me to leave in peace. Before dying I would like to claim my love because the love is not a mountain of gold neither two of rubies nor two of diamonds.

Love is not a large kingdom nor a fantasy palace. Love is not to be bought or sold.  Love is to be surrendered with sincerity; which as mine is genuine and do not measure consequences. I can see now that not only my tear but my life I am going to give. The column of dry wood was ready, forming some kind of volcano and the executioner had a torch and looking at the young man said: " You poor fellow, you should have remained silent but I will be kind to you and I will stimulate the fire so before your flesh gets burned, I will make sure that you die asphyxiated and in this way, your death will not be so cruel because although you are a fool, your story has moved me.

Then, two stout soldiers took the young man to the center of the column of wood and when they got to the center, they found a young naked woman; and they all were very surprised since she was very beautiful. They immediately went to the king and told him: " Sir, there is a problem since there is a young woman in the center of this bonfire." And the king replied: " It does not matter, perhaps is a courtesan, perhaps is his woman, anyway, throw him with her" The soldiers moved away to do as they had being told and the king ordered the executioner to light the fire, which he did and the smoke began to do its function; and in the center of the bonfire, were seen two young people embracing each other. The fire continued and continued until it burned up and was consumed completely. Later, the king asked to call his daughter to teach her about his justice and how the insolent had died

The king called the princess but the princess did not come. He kept on calling the princess but she did not come.  Then, they found a note, another parchment that the king read: " Dear father, powerful and generous king. The key of life and death, has being given to you. I have seen today my happiest day of life since I have found the true love, which I found thanks to you. After founding him, I sworn to never separate from him. And so this will be done, I have found between the treasures, the biggest treasure since I always had precious stones, fortune, kingdom, but oh father, powerful king: When did I have a tear of love? Everybody saw me as an object, everybody wanted to buy me, but of father, powerful king, who of all those powerful kings came to deliver his life to me?

Father, powerful king, forgive my action but when love came into my life, it grew fast, got wings and when I saw the sun, I went towards it.  And this day, this afternoon is my day and is my afternoon. And this sun is the sun of eternity. And that bonfire that you ordered, that damned bonfire, that blessed bonfire is now my hearth for the whole eternity. And there will not be money to buy me because today, I met my beloved and  we both feeling free, leave forever for eternity. And seeing this, the king understood. But he understood when it was too late, and he started to cry.
